Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Scientific day for the creation of UMR 9032

On Friday, November 6th, we organize a scientific day to celebrate the creation of CERMICS as a joint research unit with CNRS. See the program of the event.

Thursday, October 1, 2026, Arrival of Laura Grazioli (CNRS researcher)

Laura GRAZIOLI joined our lab as a CNRS researcher from 1st October. She was trained as a theoretical chemist, obtaining her PhD at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, under the supervision of Prof. Ju4rgen Gauss and Prof. Stella Stopkowicz. She later decided to deepen her knowledge of the mathematical aspects of quantum chemistry, joining us as a postdoc from 2024. Her research interests are mainly in the domain of wave function theory for the description of electronic states, placing her research at the interface between theoretical chemistry and applied mathematics.

Friday, July 17, 2026, Julien Guyon writes in the French newspaper L'Equipe

Julien Guyon wrote in the French newspaper L’Equipe a brief, accessible overview of the fundamental concepts of bias, variance, and randomness, using the 2026 World Cup football draw as an example: Which team was the luckiest/unluckiest during the draw? And also in English in the quantitative finance magazine Risk. This is joint work with Thomas Buchholtzer, a student in the IMI department at École des Ponts, who is set to begin a PhD this fall.

Saturday, June 6, 2026, Andrew McRae receives the 2026 SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Best Paper Prize

Andrew McRae, together with Nicolas Boumal (EPFL, Switzerland), received the 2026 SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Best Paper Prize. This prize is awarded every three years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the prize committee, on a topic in optimization published in the four calendar years preceding the award year.

Andrew and Nicolas received the prize for their paper “Benign Landscapes of Low-Dimensional Relaxations for Orthogonal Synchronization on General Graphs”. This work provides rigorous theoretical guarantees on the nonconvex landscape of a low-dimensional relaxation for orthogonal group synchronization problems, which appear in many practical applications such as robotics, imaging, and computer vision.

See the interview with the prize winners.

Friday, June 5, 2026, Amaury Hayat was interviewed in Le Monde

Amaury Hayat, permanent researcher in the MAS team, was interviewed in two articles of Le Monde about his work in AI for mathematics : Tout ce que l’IA a déjà révolutionné dans la recherche scientifique and Les agents, ces IA qui prennent des décisions de chercheurs.

CERMICS is the research center in applied mathematics of École nationale des ponts et chaussées. It is a joint research unit with CNRS (UMR 9032). It hosts joint project-teams with Inria Paris and University Gustave Eiffel, and is part of the Bézout CNRS Federation and the doctoral school EDMH. The acronym CERMICS stands for “Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherche en MathématIques et Calcul Scientifique”, literally “Center for Training and Research in MathematIcs and Scientific Computing”.

Researchers are working in three main areas: Applied Probability; Modeling, Analysis and Simulation; Optimization. The originality of the center lies in its ability to build bridges between deterministic and stochastic approaches and to produce both theoretical results and numerical methods, with strong interactions with industrial partners from various domains (transport, energy, finance, engineering, pharmaceutical companies) and academic scientists from other fields (biology, chemistry, physics and material sciences).

Below are some videos giving some idea of the research done at CERMICS. See the complete playlist. See also the playlist of students at CERMICS presenting their works, and the contributions of CERMICS members to Ingenius, the digital magazine of École des Ponts.
